Our story

Thamarat (meaning "fruits" or "harvest" in Arabic) was founded by Yara Gamal with a simple belief: that when we invest in refugee families, we help them not just survive, but flourish in their new communities.

Having witnessed firsthand the challenges refugee families face when building a new life in the Netherlands, Yara understood that the barriers aren't just about language or employment. They're about access to basic necessities, educational support for children, and feeling truly welcomed in a new home.

What we do

We support refugee families in the Netherlands through four core pillars:

  1. Basic needs

Providing clothing, school supplies, and household essentials to families rebuilding their lives.

  2. Education

Supporting academic excellence through tutoring, mentorship, and educational resources that help children reach their full potential.

  3. Community

Building connections through cultural events, gatherings, and mutual support networks that make the Netherlands feel like home.

  4. Empowerment

Offering skill-building workshops and resources for long-term self-sufficiency, helping families become independent contributors to their communities.

Our impact

Since our founding, we've supported refugee families, organized community events, and mobilized volunteers. But more importantly, we've helped create a community where refugee families don't just receive help. They become part of something bigger.

How we work

Thamarat operates through the generous support of volunteers and donors who believe in our mission. Our community-driven approach means that families aren't just recipients. They're active participants in building a stronger, more inclusive community.

Whether you need support, want to volunteer, or wish to contribute, there's a place for you in the Thamarat community.
